Plates originally used for: Exposé d'un moyen de définir et de nommer les couleurs : d'après une méthode précise et expérimentale avec l'application de ce moyen a la définition et a la dénomination des couleurs d'un grand nombre de corps naturels et de produits artificiels : atlas / par M.E. Chevreul. Paris : Didot, 1861. The lettering of the plates has been modified to reflect the current publisher, Baillière, and plate printers, Lamoureux (pl. I-IV and the 10 "cercles chromatiques") and Ch. et A. Chardon (the 13 "gammes chromatiques")

First plate, "Couleurs d'un spectre solaire", printed on heavy sheet, approximately 70 x 26 cm, and folded; all other plates (color wheels and progressive charts) printed on thin paper and afterwards mounted
Atlas of plates for color matching, according to Chevreul's system of color analysis, intended for the use of painters, textile designers, decorators, gardeners, etc., rather than scientists. Includes description of "chromochalcographie", Digeon's 4-color aquatint printing process (using separate plates for yellow, blue, red, black), with notes on the composition of the pigments

CHMRB copy has the publisher's blind-stamped and gilt-lettered green embossed cloth binding with gray endpapers. The text block has been cropped a bit closely along the fore-edge, slightly affecting the text and plate numbering. Housed in a modern black-cloth-covered clamshell box with gray printed paper spine and front cover labels
